Statutory health insurance generally covers no or only limited costs for medical treatment abroad. Private health insurance also often has restrictions. Foreign travel health insurance offers comprehensive cover and prevents high financial burdens due to unexpected medical emergencies abroad.
Travel health insurance typically covers the following services:
- Outpatient and inpatient treatment: Doctor visits, hospitalization, surgery and medical emergencies
- Medication: costs for prescription medication
- Repatriation: medically necessary repatriation to your home country
- Emergency treatment: emergency medical treatment and rescue services
- Dental treatment: emergency dental treatment
- Daily hospital allowance: additional financial support for inpatient stays (depending on the policy)
As a rule, the following are not covered
- Illnesses or accidents caused intentionally
- Treatments that were already planned or known before the start of the trip
- Costs for wellness and spa stays
- Treatment in connection with pregnancy and childbirth (depending on the contract)
- Damage caused by war, civil unrest or nuclear events
- Holidaymakers: protection against unexpected illness or accident costs while on vacation abroad
- Business travelers: Cover against medical emergencies during business trips
- Long-term travelers: Cover for longer stays abroad, e.g. semesters abroad, work-and-travel or sabbaticals
- Expats: cover for people living abroad who do not have adequate health insurance
No, as a rule travelers can visit any doctor or hospital abroad. However, it is advisable to contact the insurer's emergency call service for assistance in selecting suitable medical facilities.
Foreign travel health insurance offers special protection for medical emergencies abroad and covers costs that are often not covered by normal health insurance. Normal health insurance usually only offers limited or no cover abroad.
