ESG scoring
Detmold. The Ecclesia Group has implemented an ESG scoring tool to offer its customers an even more sustainable service portfolio in the future. The Zielke Rating is used to assess an insurer's compliance in the areas of environmental, social and governance. The scoring covers all relevant ESG topics, from the ecological footprint and responsibility towards internal and external stakeholders to the anchoring of sustainability responsibility in the company.
“Our main task as an insurance broker and risk consultant is to provide our clients with comprehensive advice on known and new risks and to find the right insurer with the best insurance coverage for each individual risk, thus offering sustainable solutions. Among other things, this includes knowing the ESG performance of insurers and understanding how sustainably these companies are positioned,” explains Thomas Olaynig, who has been head of product and portfolio management at the Ecclesia Group since July 2024. Transparency and tangible information also play an important role in relation to ESG. In addition, regulatory requirements are essential. A prominent example of this is the Supply Chain Due Diligence Act.
Sustainability is an increasingly important criterion in the selection of a risk carrier, along with other factors. “Our customers expect a certain ESG conformity from insurers, in addition to an optimal price-performance ratio and fast, contract-compliant and customer-oriented claims processing. We already offer our customers decision-making aids for many of these factors – and now also in the area of ESG,” explains Leonhard Ihli, head of insurer management at the Ecclesia Group. The new tool enables Ecclesia to select sustainable risk carriers that fit customers' ESG strategies.
Transparent and objective assessment
The Ecclesia Group relies on the expertise of Zielke Research Consult GmbH for the scoring procedure. Zielke creates its ESG rankings exclusively on the basis of publicly available data, such as sustainability reports and non-financial statements in accordance with the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) and, from next year, the CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive). “The results are thus comprehensible for everyone and offer our customers objective comparison possibilities,” explains Dr. Carsten Zielke, Managing Director of Zielke Research Consult and Zielke Rating, the ranking procedure. It is technically implemented by means of the ESG platform from the German technology company Ubirch, on which issue data from suppliers can be automatically collected and integrated.
