Extension of the toll obligation in Germany

From July 1, 2024, commercial vehicles over 3.5 tons will also be subject to tolls.

The new toll regulations in Germany particularly affect companies that have a fleet with different vehicle classes. Many fleet managers are now asking themselves the question: are my vehicles affected and what do I need to bear in mind? Burkhard Pape, an expert at the Ecclesia Mobility Competence Center, explains the situation and presents solutions.

The toll expansion in Germany will take effect on July 1, 2024. After that, commercial vehicles with a total weight of over 3.5 tons will also be subject to tolls. “Tolls will be charged on all federal highways, federal motorways, the associated slip roads, and connected service and rest areas,” says Burkhard Pape from the Mobility Management team. With the expansion of the toll requirement, this also applies to vehicles with a technically permissible maximum mass of more than 3.5 tons (F1 in part 1 of the registration certificate) that are intended for or used for commercial use. “But there are also exceptions for vehicles that are exempt from the toll,” reports the mobility manager. “These are, for example, vehicles that run on alternative fuels.” The new law also provides for exceptions for craft enterprises. However, the exact framework conditions for this have not yet been determined in detail.

Solutions for deas customers

“Many different customers are affected by the toll reform, using vehicles of more than 3.5 tons. In order to offer them a straightforward solution, we are working together with our partner DKV Mobility, which has many years of experience in toll processing,” says Burkhard Pape. DKV Mobility offers a range of toll boxes – also known as on-board units (OBUs) – for the automatic recording and settlement of tolls. They feature plug-and-play functionality, which makes registration easy. The toll boxes enable clear control over the entire vehicle fleet and also offer numerous analysis options. The tolls are then settled in a collective invoice. “The system ensures that tolls are automatically recorded and that transactions run smoothly and efficiently,” explains the automotive expert.

Changing to summer tires
Changing from winter to summer tires pays off. This is because drivers save fuel due to the lower rolling resistance. In addition, summer tires wear down more slowly and offer more driving stability at higher temperatures.
